ADVANCED FRAMING FOR ENERGY AND RESOURCE EFFICIENCY

A high-performance building envelope is one of the key factors in achieving energy efficiency and occupant comfort. The use of blower door testing and Infra-Red cameras has enabled us to see and identify sources of air leakage and thermal bridging and see how they degrade the performance of buildings. The framing factor, which is the percent area of framing members to wall assemblies, can be as high as 25% in non-advance framed enclosures. Optimizing building envelopes by reducing the framing factor leads to lower air leakages, less thermal bridging, and an effective and high (as opposed to rated or nominal) R-values. Well implemented advanced framing lowers the material costs, labor, and construction waste, and ultimately leads to improved occupant comfort and smaller HVAC systems. This class covers advanced designs and construction methods for optimizing building enclosures. It enables architects and builders overcome the common hurdles of implementing advanced framing in residential and low-rise commercial wood framed buildings.
