PHCA Member Meeting | Ventilation for High Performance Multifamily Buildings
Why should you attend this presentation?
California is facing a housing crisis and it is estimated that we will need to more than double our current pace of production and add 180,000 housing units per year through 2025. Governor Newsome’s commitment and pending legislation are expected to drive an exponential increase in low-rise multifamily construction.
Recent projects across America have proven that it is possible to design and build multifamily buildings to Passive House performance standards with little or no additional investment required. It has also been proven that these buildings operate on less than one-quarter of the energy needed for buildings that are only code compliant… thus enabling zero net energy with a much smaller investment in renewable energy production. When you add in the increased comfort, quiet, and health benefits, Passive House multifamily is the proverbial “ no brainer”.
A key factor driving the exceptional energy performance of Passive House buildings is airtightness. An airtight building keeps the conditioned warm air from leaking out in winter and prevents the intrusion of hot air from outside during summer. Ahh, but since we occupants need continuous fresh air, Passive House multifamily buildings require sophisticated ventilation systems to provide that fresh air with minimum loss of heat in winter or heat gain in summer.
By attending this presentation you will learn about advanced ventilation strategies and solutions that provide continuous fresh air in big buildings as efficiently as possible. In terms of air exchange, maximum efficiency equates to minimal loss of thermal energy in the process, and is therefore extremely impactful. For example: While the difference between 90% efficiency and 80% efficiency seems small, the resulting thermal energy loss doubles from 10% to 20%... also doubling the energy needed to offset the loss and maintain the desired indoor temperature. We look forward to seeing you at 6:00PM on June 4th.
Speaker: Barry Stephens is Northeast Region Manager for Ventacity Systems, Inc., providing very high performance, Passive House certified, HRVs, ERVs, and advanced control systems for commercial buildings, including multifamily and education. Previously, Mr. Stephens spent 15 years with Zehnder America, Inc. where he led the introduction of Zehnder systems in North America. He has been involved with commercial projects and presented at conferences across North America since 2010.
