Visit SF’s Newest Passive House on May 14 (10am-1pm)

Sat, 05/14/2016 -
10:00am to 1:00pm

Home tour and coffee with the designers and occupants Jonathan Kaplan (owner/designer), Sarah Malarkey (owner/designer) and Graham Irwin (Passive House consultant/designer), who will describe their shared adventure in retrofitting a 1960s-era Noe Valley fixer to meet Passive House Institute (PHI) standards. This single family dwelling was stripped down to the studs before receiving an entirely new building envelope to meet exacting PHI standards for air tightness and insulation. Energy use is further reduced by solar thermal water heating, heat recovery ventilation, drain heat recovery, a venting skylight and on-demand hot water recirculation. The result is a sleek modern interior that’s nearly always warm, quiet and needs no furnace. Come join Jonathan, Sarah and Graham as we discuss:

• Aesthetic, comfort and efficiency benefits of Passive House construction
• Design and construction challenges faced along the way
• Adventures in pushing the limits of DIY building
• The passive house living experience
